Fragrance Aftercare Guide
How to Preserve and Protect Your Olfactive Imprints
At City of Scents, our products are crafted with high concentrations of fine fragrance and essential oils. To preserve the longevity, safety, and scent clarity of your candles, incense, and home fragrance products, follow this aftercare guide.
The Art of the Burn: Candle Care
A luxury candle is a living element. Proper care helps ensure a cleaner burn, stronger scent performance, and a better experience from first light to final use.
The Critical First Burn
To prevent tunneling, always allow the wax to melt completely across the surface to the edges of the vessel during the first burn. This helps set the wax memory for future burns.
Trim Your Wick
Before each use, trim the wick to approximately 1/4 inch / 6mm. This helps control the flame, reduce soot, and keep the scent experience clean.
Follow the 4-Hour Rule
Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Longer burn times can overheat the vessel and affect the integrity of the fragrance.
Extinguish Carefully
Use a candle snuffer when possible instead of blowing out the flame. This helps reduce excess smoke and keeps the wick centered for the next burn.
Preserving the Essence: Incense Care
Our incense is rich in aromatic oils. Because incense is a dry fragrance format, proper storage helps preserve its potency and scent clarity.
Keep It Sealed
Store incense sticks in their original packaging or a sealed container when not in use. This helps reduce fragrance evaporation over time.
Avoid Direct Sunlight
Keep incense in a cool, dry, dark place. Direct sunlight and heat can affect fragrance quality and appearance.
Burn in Still Air
For the best experience, burn incense in a room with calm airflow. Excessive drafts can cause the stick to burn too quickly and reduce the fragrance experience.
Use a Heat-Resistant Burner
Always burn incense in a suitable heat-resistant holder or burner. Allow ash to cool completely before disposal.
Safe Practices
Never Leave Fragrance Unattended
Always keep burning candles and incense within sight.
Use Heat-Resistant Surfaces
Place candles, vessels, and burners on stable, heat-resistant surfaces. Glass and ceramic can become hot during use.
Keep Away From Children, Pets, and Flammable Materials
Keep all burning fragrance products away from children, pets, curtains, dried florals, paper, and other flammable materials.
Discontinue Candle Use at 1/2 Inch of Wax
Stop using your candle once approximately 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel. This helps prevent overheating.
Repurposing Your Vessel
Our glass vessels are designed for a second life.
Once your candle has reached the end of its safe use, allow the remaining wax to cool completely. Carefully clean the vessel with warm, soapy water to remove residual wax.
Your vessel can be repurposed as:
- A planter for small succulents
- A desktop organizer for stationery
- A minimalist vanity jar for cotton rounds
- A holder for matches or small accessories
